Because statistical analysis is quantitative in nature, it can sometimes obscure important qualitative findings in research like mine. However, because I am performing statistical analysis on inherently qualitative data, it can actually help reveal larger patterns that may have otherwise been lost or overlooked in a purely qualitative analysis. A March 1995 referendum extended the president’s term until 2000, solidifying Nazarbayev’s control and raising serious doubts among Kazakhstani people and international observers as to the state of Kazakhstani democracy.
